Responsible gambling
The house edge is the default outcome
VigPulse studies betting markets. Studying them does not make them safe, and nothing on this site is an encouragement to wager. This page exists because a project that publishes edge estimates has an obligation to be equally clear about who usually loses, and about where to get help.

In the United States, call or text 1-800-GAMBLER to reach the National Problem Gambling Helpline. In the United Kingdom, call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133. In Australia, call Gambling Help Online on 1800 858 858. These services are independent of VigPulse, they are free, and they do not require you to have hit a crisis point to be worth calling.
If you are thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line immediately rather than a gambling helpline. In the US and Canada, call or text 988.
The arithmetic
Why most people lose, stated without softening
- Typical hold on a two-sided market
- 4–5%
- Break-even win rate at -110
- 52.4%
- VigPulse win rate to date
- 27.3%
Priced into a standard -110 / -110 line before anyone is right about anything
Being right more often than not is not enough; you must clear the vig
9W-24L across 33 graded paper entries
The vig is the margin a sportsbook builds into both sides of a market. It means the break-even point sits above a coin flip, permanently, on every bet you place. A bettor who is genuinely good is fighting for a few percentage points above that line, and most people who believe they are in that group are not.
Read our own numbers with the same scepticism. The published record shows 9 wins against 24 losses. The unit total is positive only because a small number of longshots landed: 65% of all winning units came from three entries. Remove those three and the picture changes completely. That is what variance looks like in a sample this small, and it is why the ledger is presented as a working log rather than a track record.
No result on this site predicts your outcome, and no analysis anywhere can remove the risk from a wager.
Warning signs
What problem gambling actually looks like
Signs in your own betting
Any one is worth pausing on- Betting more than you decided to, or more often than you meant to.
- Chasing losses — increasing stakes to get back to even rather than because the price is good.
- Betting with money set aside for rent, food, bills, or debt repayment.
- Borrowing to bet, or selling things to bet.
- Hiding the size or frequency of your betting from people close to you.
Signs that are easy to miss
Often noticed by others first- Feeling restless, irritable, or flat when you are not betting.
- Betting to escape stress, low mood, loneliness, or boredom rather than because you saw a number you liked.
- Lying about wins, or remembering wins far more clearly than losses.
- Betting during work, sleep hours, or events you would rather have been present for.
- Relief rather than enjoyment when a bet lands.
If several of those are familiar
You do not need a diagnosis, a rock-bottom moment, or a specific amount of debt to call a helpline. The services listed below take calls from people who are simply uneasy about their own behaviour, and from friends and family, and they do not charge for it.
Practical steps
Controls that work better than resolve
Decide limits in advance
Money and timeSet a loss limit and a time limit before you start, in writing, and treat the amount as spent the moment it is staked. Deposit limits set at the operator are far more effective than a limit you keep in your head.
Never bet borrowed money
No exceptionsCredit, loans, overdrafts, advances, and money owed elsewhere are the clearest line in this whole subject. Crossing it converts a bad session into a lasting problem.
Refuse to chase
The most damaging habitIncreasing stake size because you are down is the behaviour that turns variance into ruin. A price is either good or it is not; your current balance is not an input to that question.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| GAMSTOP | Free UK self-exclusion scheme. One registration blocks you from every operator licensed in Great Britain for a chosen period. |
| BetBlocker | Free blocking app covering tens of thousands of gambling sites across devices. No account or personal detail required. |
| Operator and state self-exclusion | Most sportsbooks offer deposit limits, time-outs, and self-exclusion in account settings, and many US states run their own exclusion registers. |
On staking calculators
The Kelly calculator on this site returns a mathematically optimal stake given a probability estimate you supply. Full Kelly assumes your estimate is correct, and estimates in betting markets rarely are. It produces stake sizes and drawdowns that most people cannot sit through. If you use it at all, use a fraction of it, and treat the output as an upper bound rather than a target.
